Most hot chocolate is cocoa powder stirred into hot water or milk from a packet — fine for what it is, but not what you’re getting here. Ours starts with Goodnow Farms House Blend Hot Cocoa, steamed into organic milk rather than mixed with water, and the difference shows up in the first sip.

The chocolate

We use Goodnow Farms House Blend, from a small-batch, bean-to-bar chocolate maker that has picked up multiple International Chocolate Awards for its drinking chocolate. This particular blend has been recognized as one of the best hot chocolates in the country. It’s the same chocolate we use in our mochas, so if you’ve had one of those and liked it, you already know the base.

Why it tastes different

We steam it into organic milk instead of building it on hot water, which is what makes it richer and creamier than what you’ll get at most cafés. It’s also lightly sweetened and leans dark — closer to a European drinking chocolate than the very sweet, cocoa-and-sugar mix most Americans grew up on.

That means if you’re used to Swiss Miss or chocolate syrup stirred into milk, ours will read as less sweet on the first try.
